The problem of our time, to riff off of G.K. Chesterton, is that “The truth hasn’t been tried and found wanting, it’s been unheard and left untried.” Witness the new wave of atheism that has been sweeping over the cultural landscape over the past couple of decades. At the vanguard are Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett, and the late Christopher Hitchens whose anti-God books have become popular best-sellers. In the preface to his book, The God Delusion, Richard Dawkins made no bones about his goal “If this book works as I intend, religious readers who open it will be atheists when they put it down.” In similar vein, my hope for this book is that unbelievers who open it will be believers when they put it down, and believers who open it will be more confident in their beliefs and better equipped to give voice to the truth. While Dawkins and his ilk take pride in claiming that their beliefs are based on reason and facts, not faith and just-so stories, beneath the patina of intellectualism is a blinkered commitment to (that is, faith in) their own just-so stories. Thus, breaking the spell of unbelief starts with dismantling intellectual barriers that have been erected to block out the light of truth. To equip the reader to do just that, this book, written for expert and layman alike, addresses truth from the ground up from nature of knowledge and the knowledge of nature; to the competing narratives of naturalism and theism in explaining the origin of the universe, life, morality, and the metaphysical questions of meaning, purpose, and significance, and the role faith plays in all explanatory accounts and how God -- in particular, the Christian God -- is the “explanation” that best fits the facts, notwithstanding the age-old problems of evil, suffering, and injustice.

I could not stop reading this book until I finished it. I first encountered Regis Nicoll's writing via his email subscription to his email blog (for a better word) in February 2013 while searching for the best ways to explain my beliefs as a well-educated Christian living and working among well-educated non-believers. I always look forward to his next post (sometimes including shortcuts to his articles in BreakPoint, Salvo, and Crosswalk). Regis Nicoll writes logically and intelligently from a Christian perspective about issues that impact our society. And, here in this book, Why There Is a God: And Why It Matters, he presents the biggest of all issues: the existence of God. He has created compelling arguments for the existence of God drawing upon his own background and knowledge in the sciences, and convincingly refutes counterarguments. Regis Nicoll provides superb and clear and intelligent explanations of why we need salvation, why God came to earth to save us, and what we need to know to help others understand. It is our job as Christians to bring God to others, and there is nothing more stubborn than a well-educated non-believer. I spent nearly 20 years as a well-educated very stubborn atheist, and it almost killed me.

Why There Is a God And Why It Matters REGIS NICOLL 9781520469836 Books Reviews

I liked this book so much that I recommended it to 6 other men who also bought it. We met once per week to review and discuss this excellent book. Normally we men meet as a Bible study. This book worked well for that purpose, too.
The author tears down our walls of comfort in believing we know how the world works. He then provides a meaningful defense of the thinking Christian's worldview. A must read for speaking with your friends about "science."
This is a fantastic book for all believers, but more importantly, the skeptical/unbelievers. Nicoll presents logical arguments using science from Einstein to Darwin to Freud to rationally make his point. I feel that Regis Nicoll is the C. S. Lewis of our day.
I liked this book. While most top physicists seem to be of an atheistic bent, often militantly so, finally here is an intelligent and well educated author with a background in physics makeing a cogent argument for the existence of a divine creator and making a good case as to why Christianity makes sense.

A compelling central theme is his comparing and contrasting of the lives of Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis by way of spotlighting the scientific materialist vs person of faith perspectives.

However on the negative side I was surprised that someone so obviously intelligent should cleave to the official storyline regarding the events of 9/11/2001 in New York. The flawed documentary 'Loose Change' may not be the last word on the subject but it does serve to point out the incongruity of the official story which always seemed absurd to me from day one.
A very logical, reasoned and supported argument that allows the reader to move to the ultimate conclusion. easy to follow and retain to be able to share.
I've been a fan of Mr. Nicoll's writings and insights for a number of years. With this powerful book, he once again challenges me to delve deeper into my own faith and the fabric of evidence for not only God's existence but, His involvement and commitment to his highest creation--humankind. He somehow makes the subatomic world come alive and fun, all the while making a compelling and persuasive case for his worldview, placing it neatly into the procession of history and culture. I've been reading the version (it has some advantages) but just ordered the paperback to place in my library. Bravo Mr. Nicoll! Highly recommend.
What is most compelling about this book is it's reasoned movement towards a conclusion that is coherent, reasonable and stimulating. Regis pulls together in a single book the important issues of our times and how they impact every person. Men and Women are all thinkers. The choice is how deeply and consistently they choose to do so. This book is one that challenges people to think about the "big" issues and where they stand on them. Ravi Zacharias has pointed out that a worldview must address the big issues of origin, meaning, morality and destiny. Regis puts these demanads and their answers in sharp focus.
